The dreamcast is great and so easy to Mod, I did Shell Swap, GDEMU, Dream PSU (powersupply) and I got the Brawler DC Striker Wireless controller. It's great, I am running VGA out to a CRT so I can still play the light gun games. The GDEMU is awesome much quieter and faster than the CD. I really recommend the Dream PSU even if you want to use the CD Drive still. The power supplies have been the most common issue for me. My local game store has a closet with a half dozen broken Dreamcasts, I get two and fix one for them and end up with a free dreamcast for myself.

I went to the Arkansas Retro Expo as well. I had a really good time. I agree, the space was hot and tight. But it was better than the year before space in hot springs. I was able to take home a jungle green n64 with expansions pack.

I went to MODE because of my model was VA0, but if I could I would go with GDEMU. MODE works fine, but the software is a little buggy and seems like abandoned from Terraonion

They had rechargeable cell packs and batteries. If you went with rechargeable batteries no alkaline, but the batteries used for video tape cameras.

The big plus of having a Nomad vs a regular console is the Dpad. I have yet to find a better Dpad than on the Nomad; it’s a travesty that no other controller ever used it.

How does the D-pad there feel compared to the Neo Geo Pocket Color, which is kind of the gold standard for that kind of mechanical d-pad design?

With these drive emulators, and the USB C power supply, and fan replacements, as well as Ram upgrades the DC can be kept going for years to come. My DC already has has its spindle motor replaced back in 2004 ish. With the price of the Mode i can't justify the cost, the GDEmu is going to be my only option for my DC. 13:54 i do not like that.

I actually didn't run into any of the issues you had with the GDEMU. I simply dragged and dropped the games into GDMENU Card Manager and it was quite simple to get up and running. When a friend of mine got his GDEMU, I simply copied my SD card onto his. I don't know why my experience was hassle-free, unlike yours. But if I were to hazard a guess, it would be in the quality of the SD cards. There are lots of counterfeits and fakes out there these days, and it is in everyone's best interest to verify their cards before use so that important data isn't lost, or unwanted behavior occurs shortly down the road.

Does CD-R damage the CD player lens?

I bought that same exact camo model last month for $38 but I had to replace the lcd screen because the polarizer layer was peeling off. I love how this thing feels in the hand. Too bad I only have one game for it (Metal Slug 1st Mission) which cost me $40.

Thanks for doing this video on the Nomad. I currently have 5 Nomads. I buy them not working and repair and upgrade them. There was a rechargeable battery pack available for the Nomad, unfortunately if you find one the batteries will be no good and it will have to modded to take modern batteries. There is a TFT screen you can mod the Nomad with that is cheap and uses the Composite output, easy install. I think the TFT is a better looking option over the IPS because it compliments the original look with a better screen. I haven't come across any Nomads with leaking Caps yet, but I have noticed after recapping with high quality caps the video and sound improves. This is a milestone in video gaming history, SEGA's "Switch".

I collect, but I only play on the GDEMU. I don't want to wear out my disc drive and damage the discs I bought.

I think the main thing that pushes it above the wave bird for a majority of people should be the Bluetooth functionality allowing you to connect it to pretty much all your other systems. Like if you wanted to play GameCube games on your PC or smash bros on switch this allows you to do all those things for most likely a cheaper price. I think you should have at least mentioned that part of the control in this video as a separate section just so people discovering this controller know that

I feel like you were very realistic about the drawbacks while also acknowledging the use cases for them. One question I had is do you think it would be possible to put a Dell optiplex in one of these instead of a raspberry pi?

Be good if someone could implement a built-in VMU in a controller, with a modern OLED screen and microSD storage (so saves can be backed up easily). Then power the whole thing off a modern LiPo cell. That dongle is a kludge, and I don't have a convenient space for it either. I'd rather it had a _longer_ cable, actually, so it can be stashed out of the way.

You forgot to say that you cannot change only GDEMU. You will have to change or modify the power supply otherwise you will overheat and burn out the processor. If you sell a dreamcast with a GDEMU mod and don't change the power supply, then you are doing very badly. GDEMU always changes with dream psu power supply.
